Dalam Epos Gilgames Gilgames dikatakan telah memerintahkan pembangunan tembok-tembok legendaris di Uruk. Sebuah versi alternatifnya mengatakan bahwa Gilgames, menjelang akhir ceritanya, berbual kepada Urshanabi, sang jurumudi bahwa dinding kota itu dibangun oleh Tujuh Orang Bijak. Dalam catatan sejarah, Sargon Agung mengklaim bahwa ia telah menghancurkan dinding-dinding ini untuk membuktikan kekuatan militernya. Para ahli percaya bahwa Epos Gilgames kemungkinan berkaitan dengan cerita Alkitab tentang air bah yang disebutkan dalam Kitab Kejadian.
Potongan-potongan dari sebuah epos yang ditemukan di Me-Turan (Tell Haddad sekarang) mengisahkan bahwa Gilgames dikuburkan di bawah air dari sebuah sungai pada akhir hayatnya. Rakyat Uruk mengalihkan aliran Sungai Eufrat untuk melintasi Uruk dengan maksud menguburkan raja mereka yang telah meninggal di dasar sungai. Pada April 2003, sebuah tim ekspedisi Jerman menemukan apa yang diduga sebagai seluruh kota Uruk - termasuk, tempat yang pernah dialiri Eufrat, tempat peristirahatan terakhir rajanya, Gilgames.
Meskipun tidak ada bukti langsung, kebanyakan ahli tidak menentang pendapat yang menyatakan Gilgames sebagai tokoh historis, khususnya setelah ditemukannya prasasti-prasasti yang mengukuhkan keberadaan historis tokoh-tokoh lainnya yang berkaitan dengannya: raja Enmebaragesi dan Aga dari Kish. Bila Gilgames memang seorang raja historis, ia kemungkinan memerintah sekitar abad ke-26 SM. Beberapa teks Sumeria yang paling awal mengeja namanya sebagai Bilgamesh. Kesulitan-kesulitan awal dalam membaca huruf-huruf cuneiform (huruf paku) menyebabkan Gilgames masuk kembali ke dunia budaya pada 1891 sebagai "Izdubar".
Dalam kebanyakan teks, Gilgames ditulis dengan yakin sebagai makhluk ilahi (DINGIR) – tetapi tidak ada bukti untuk penyembahan pada masa sezaman, sementara mitos-mitos Sumeria tentang Gilgames menunjukkan bahwa deifikasinya (pendewaan) adalah suatu perkembangan di kemudian hari (berbeda dengan kasus dewa-raja Akkad). Historis atau tidak, Gilgames menjadi tokoh pahlawan legendaries dalam Epos Gilgames.

Gilgames, menurut Daftar raja Sumeria, adalah raja kelima Uruk (Dinasti Awal II, dinasti pertama Uruk), anak laki-laki Lugalbanda, yang memerintah sekitar 2650 SM. Menurut legenda, ibundanya adalah Ninsun, (yang kadang-kadang disebut Ramat Ninsun), seorang dewi. Yang membingungkan, ceritanya menggambarkan bahwa Gilgames dua-pertiga dewa dan sepertiga manusia.
Menurut sebuah dokumen lain, yang dikenal sebagai "Sejarah Tummal", Gilgames, dan akhirnya anak lelakinya, Urlugal, membangun kembali tempat penyembahwan dewi Ninlil, yang terletak di Tummal, satu blok dari kota Nippur. Dalam mitologi Mesopotamia, Gilgames dipuji sebagai makhluk setengah manusia yang mempunyai kekuatan super-manusia, yang membangun dinding besar untuk melindungi rakyatnya dari ancaman-ancaman dari luar. Cerita ini dapat dikatakan sebagai ekuivalen dari cerita Yunani tentang Heracles
